A traveling independent photographer documenting the music he loves.

Daniel Coston has been described as “Tom Sawyer with a camera,” an independent photographer that has spent the past twelve years documenting the music that he loved, and documenting a large section of the world of music. He describes photography as his “accidental career,” yet has constantly found himself in the right place, at the right time.

Coston photographed Johnny Cash’s final public appearances at the invitation of the Carter Family. He also photographed Roky Erickson’s triumphant return to public performance after a decade of silence. Coston did the tour photos for the Down From the Mountain tour in 2002 and then spent two days with Les Paul in Nashville the following year. Be it in Texas or in Sigur Ros’ studio in Iceland, Daniel has been there and has the photos to tell the story.

Coston began his career in 1996, while working as a feature writer for a magazine in North Carolina. When the photographer didn’t show for an interview that he was doing with Douglas Adams, Coston grabbed his father’s Canon AE-1 out of the closet, and took the photos. The following week, he did the same at the Farm Aid festival. Coston soon realized that photography was a lot more fun, and the journey was on.

Coston’s credits are as wide-ranging as his archives. Johnny Cash, Big Star, Arcade Fire, Down From The Mountain tour, Al Stewart, Alejandro Escovedo, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Tortoise, the dbs, the Remains, Superchunk, Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Son Volt, Wilco and Guided by Voices are just some of the notable artists that have used his photos. Coston has also been published in magazines around the world, and in over eighty CD's to date.

Coston also has had the knack of finding cool bands on their way up to stardom, photographing early records by the Drive-By Truckers, the Avett Brothers, Nicole Atkins, Tift Merritt and several others, while continuing to work with new bands such as current Americana favorites Chatham County Line.

What does the future for Coston and his photos hold? After recently traveling to London to photograph the Zombies’ first ever performance of Odessey & Oracle, two book projects currently in the works, and his recent signing to the prestigious Walnut Street Gallery, the future for Daniel’s accidental career is as far as he’s able to photograph.
